In recent years, interest in sleep-disordered breathing, including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), has increased considerably in both Japan and Korea, and sleep medicine is now regarded as an important academic discipline that should not only advance diagnosis and treatment but also return its achievements to society.
The treatment of OSA has developed principally around continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. In recent years, however, a broader range of options tailored to each patient's pathophysiology has become increasingly important, including oral appliances, surgery of the nasal, pharyngeal, and maxillofacial regions, and hypoglossal nerve stimulation.
Sleep surgery is a multidisciplinary field that requires close collaboration among otorhinolaryngology–head and neck surgery, oral surgery, dentistry, respiratory medicine, psychiatry, and anesthesiology; international information-sharing and continued discussion are therefore essential.
The Japan–Korea Sleep Surgery Symposium has been established to enable physicians and researchers engaged in sleep surgery in both countries to share their experience and to advance future academic exchange and clinical research. The program comprises lectures and discussions on the latest knowledge, treatment strategies, preoperative evaluation, and the education of young surgeons.
Emerging techniques and devices reshaping surgical care for sleep-disordered breathing.
Airway management and surgical decision-making in children.
The role of nasal surgery in sleep-disordered breathing.
